High Resolution
Question: What level of resolution can a PCBMotor deliver?
Answer: We measured for high resolution positioning and have made the following measurements.
We can get very high resolution when we turn the motor on in micro steps down to 0.1msec width each. The motor is operating at a frequency of 40kHz and we need a least a few cycles of 25usec
(40kHz) per micro step, hence the limit of 100usec.
The following should be noted:
- An eval kit with tracking controller and a potentiometer as position sensor was used in the experiment,
- The chart was made with a very light rotor. A larger rotor mass will make the steps smaller, i.e. more steps per revolution,
- Each micro step was followed by a pause of 30msec to measure the position,
- Audible noise is associated with the micro stepping: Each step is heard as a small click,
Motor reliability and life time with extended use of micro stepping has not yet been investigated.
